Melbourne update
Hiya everyone.
Now that we’re back to the rainy weather of the UK we just wanted to say a big thank you to the Welsh Team for making the games so enjoyable. To Bill, Irene and John (coaches and manager) for there tireless help, and to the Welsh medical staff for patching us up when we needed it.
We’d like to thank everyone for there messages of support, and last but not least, to Dad for getting up at some unearthly hour to picking us up at Heathrow, and to Mum and Peter for keeping our website up to date.
Thanks everyone

Tuesday 28th March
Not really sure what time it is (or even what day of the week it is!) but we have arrived back safely early this morning

CHAPTER NINE

We are on our way home! We took off from Melbourne at 07.05 am British Summer Time (17.05 Melbourne time) and have a stopover in Singapore sometime today for refuelling before carrying on to London Heathrow. It is like travelling in a Time Machine backwards for 10 hours! (probably as near as we are going to get to “Tardis” time travel…)
We are due to land at Heathrow at approximately 05.30 am on Tuesday 28th March. See you there…..!
(Thanks Mum and Dad for airport taxi service!!)

With two days of competition still left for shooting, the Welsh shooters have won 3 medals (1 gold, 2 bronze), which beats the 2002 total of 1 gold and one bronze. One of our team mates, Dave Phelps has shot exceptionally well since we arrived in Melbourne, winning Bronze with Griff Morgan in the Men’s 50m prone pairs, and to round this off he then won individual Gold in the Men’s 50m prone match on Wednesday. This really lifted the whole team and with our match the following day, it was incredible inspiration for both of us.
Here is a selection of photos from our Melbourne Album:
23rd March 2006

Siân and Jenny both did well in their final match. Out of 23 competitors in the Qualifying Round, Siân finished 4th with a score of 571 and Jenny came 18th with 555. Siân went into the final with one of the best eight scores and successfully maintained her fourth place with an excellent final round score of 95.4, making her aggregate score 666.4 overall, narrowly missing Bronze.
As you can imagine, we are all delighted with Jenny and Siân’s excellent results – CONGRATULATIONS to them both!
We have quoted Siân’s email below:

Hello
Just to let you know that I finished 4th in the 3p individual match that took place this morning. I was 4th in the match and remained 4th following the final as the match and final scores are added together for an overall total. Since this was my first major international final I'm very happy to have held my position following the final.
Best wishes to everybody
Siân

TV INFORMATION
TV coverage is miniscule for a sport like shooting, so you are unlikely to see any events unless you have cable or sky digital, though there may be some coverage of medal winners (like Mick Gault in the pistol events) in news round-ups.
Shooting is generally scheduled to be shown at around 1430 virtually every day (1100 on Saturday 25th). This is available to digital satellite and cable viewers, but is not available to Freeview viewers due to limited bandwidth. You will normally find it on the 5th stream (or the 4th stream as today) in the BBC multi-screen broadcast (bottom right-hand corner of screen).
You can find a detailed schedule at the following link, although all times could of course be subject to late change!

16th of March 2006:

The opening ceremony in the Stadium was awesome, and the pyrotechnics spectacular, and enjoyed by all. And who would have thought you would ever get a tram that high in the air! Unfortunately the competitors missed the first half of it as they were being held in a holding area somewhere else (the Rod Laver Arena ,Melbourne Park which is where the Gymnastics are being held) ready for their parade into the Stadium in their teams
Jenny managed to get a front place in the line-up as she turned her ankle during the afternoon and the doctor would only allow her to go if she went in a wheelchair with a plank of wood to keep her leg up because of all the walking and the standing around. The chair was expertly piloted by Dave Phelps (men’s prone .22) – thanks Dave. You might have spotted them just behind the Wales Team Captain and flag bearer, Dame Tani Grey Thompson if you watched it on TV.
Thanks to all the medical and other staff from Wales and fellow team members who bent over backwards to help Jenny through her predicament to get her to the Opening Ceremony. And our continuing thanks to the medical and physio staff who are getting her fit to compete on Friday 17th in the Ladies Air Rifle Pairs with Siân. |
13th of March 2006:
Chapter Three!!
Hi Everybody
We’ve had both badge matches. Sian got 388 and was 9th in the Ladies Air Rifle. 3-position .22 Ladies Rifle today – Jenny got a “Personal Best”(pb)of 566 - but there’s still room for improvement. Sian got 574, and came 3rd = Bronze.
.
We've both now finished shooting until after the opening ceremony
As a team, we've now go the full set of badges with Jo Brekke getting the Ladies Prone Gold, and Wales also got a silver in shotgun.
Weather has been a scorcher over last couple of days - was forecast at 36*C yesterday – Jenny’s alarm clock thermometer reached 45 in sun 42 in shade, it was still 30 in our room when we went to bed - not a very comfortable night! But it’s been raining this morning which has cooled things down, and should be more comfortable this week.
We had our team reception and photo last night in our formal suits. There were some speeches and entertainment which was quite good. Tani Grey Thomson's Team Captain speech was especially good. The only problem was the lack of air con on the bus!

Thursday, 9th March 2006
Hiya!
Training seems to be going well - the last 4 days have been unofficial training, and we've both been through “equipment control”. (“Equipment control” is where our rifles, shooting jackets and trousers, etc are all checked and tested to make sure that they conform to international standards)
The Air Rifle “badge match” is on Saturday 11th March, and the three-position .22 rifle “badge match” is on Monday 13th March. These are serious matches – the real thing in all but name (like a final dress rehearsal).
On Sunday 12th March we go to the team Welcoming Ceremony at the Village and then a reception with the team sponsors.
Hope you like the photos below!
Luv Jenny

| Our house - all good, just lacks air conditioning! This is “Little Wales” – the part of the Village where all the Welsh Team Athletes are living (as you can tell by all the dragons…) |

|
This is the International Area : it contains the outdoor cinema / stage (which is where the Welcoming Ceremony will be); the computer room with 100 PC's; x box lounge; pool room; some shops; (but no dragons, at the moment….):
|
|
Foooooood! This is the main dining area with anything and everything you could want (especially ICE CREAM) - and its all free! It’s in a huge air-conditioned marquee. |
|
Wales offices - next to the Welsh houses there’s a line of portacabins housing the admin people, Welsh physiotherapists doctors etc. (and dragons) |
|
Living Room in our house (but no dragons this time!). Our room is through the open door at the end. |
|
Our room (more dragons…..!) |
|
The Ranges:
Both 50m and air ranges are very cramped, with next to no space behind firing points for all the competitors’ equipment and bags, never mind any spectators!
|

Above and below are views of the 50 metre .22 range

|
The weather has been about 25*C this week, expected to be warming up to 35*C at the weekend. To the left is the Air Range – it is a tin can - we're gonna cook on Saturday when we are doing the air rifle “badge match”!! |

|
AND FINALLY : this is a sign at the entrance to range - this is just before you go through “Security”, and makes interesting reading - ie. no firearms (this is a competition shooting range!) and we haven't worked out what’s wrong with torn up paper!

Sisters!
Packing……..
 |
There have been weeks of preparation for this. But the last week was most hectic! |
|
Departure Day: how do we fit it all in?

Siân and Jenny left with the rest of the Welsh shooting contingent from Heathrow on the evening of 26th February. After a long flight (with one brief stop for refuelling in Singapore) they landed in Melbourne at 6.30am local time on 28th February (7.30 pm our time 27th Feb). (Are you managing to follow with this 11 hour time difference ………..!!!) |

 |
View of the stadium |
|
They have spent a few days in air-conditioned apartments, acclimatising and turning their body clocks around, and getting used to the enormous heat difference between Oz and UK! These are the views from their window. |
|
On 5th March the team moved into the Commonwealth Village. The Welsh shooting team are all living in the same house and i t was a scorcher for their first day in their new home (without the air-conditioning they’d had in their previous apartments!) |
| The Village is a large brand-new residential area, secured and sealed-off from the general public. To get in you go through the similar checks to those in an airport. There are police and security staff all around the village. It is nice to know that they are taking so much care of competitors!! |
|
Check out Dave Phelps' Shooting experiences at: http://www.dave-shooting.blogspot.com/ for more photos of the Village and news of the Welsh shooting team (Dave is one of Jenny and Siân’s fellow team members).
Thanks Dave for sharing your blog with us! |
